Now, we don't make a habit of eating things with fermented cabbage, or salad dressing with pickles in it, or even things that have been corned. So, this was a new experience for our kids. Sam ate his happily, I even heard him say "mmm" once. He's sort of like a goat in that way. Gracie on the other hand made quite another sound when she took her first bite...which then turned into a whole set of stages on her journey to the reality of the grossness of a Reuben sandwich.
G: "Ew! Why are we eating something so gross?!"
me: "Because it's daddy's day and he likes this kind of sandwich".
G: Stink eye in Jared' s general direction.
3. Denial
The rule in our house is that you are not allowed to spit out food because you think it's gross. (even though it sounds like it, we really don't eat that much gross food around here). So, she just held her bite in her mouth for like 3 minutes trying to wait it out until we said she could spit it. I'll let you guess who won.
She actually cried because she hated it so much. Actual tears. Or maybe it was just the fumes off the sandwich making her eyes water. We may never know. She won't talk about it.

i'm laughing so hard vanessa! bryan TOTALLY loves the reuben. but i've forbidden it.
oh man.
I've never tried a Reuben. After seeing those hilarious pictures of gracie, I don't think i ever will. Shock, anger, denial, sadness-classic.
Lee's favorite sandwich is the Rueben---it must just be males who like it.
So I watched "Supersize Me" the other day which I think is a great video. The funny thing is that although it makes its point very clear about how unhealthy McD's is, it also makes you want to go eat a Big Mac. That's what this blog reminds me of...cuz I kinda want a reuben now.
Funny thing, I like reubens--but only when I'm pregnant. Go figure! You'd think I'd want to throw up from all the mixture of flavors and smells, but for some reason, they taste good to the baby.
You tell Gracie I am right with her. The smell of Tuna fish sandwiches also makes me want to cry. How does she feel about those? I refuse to kiss Sam if he eats one. Come to think of it, he hasn't had one in more than three years.
You are HYSTERICAL. If you can really get your children to eat less-than-desireable food...then you're a genius. :-)
