It’s official. I am a mom. A couple of weeks ago, we found out that the engine needed replaced in our Subaru. And since it was going to be super- expensive, we decided to just buy another car.
Well, I have had what J calls Mini-Van Fever for a while now. I just see all of these moms driving their vans around and it just seems so darn convenient. Anyways, after driving lots of cars and a couple of vans, we finally decided to buy a van.
I think it is saying a lot about the stage that I am in in my life right now. Buying a van is basically saying that your children are completely taking over your life. Your mode of transportation, which used to be a form of self-expression, is now centered on their needs. It really is their van. And even though my kids are 4 and 1 ½, I have never felt so defined a mom, as I have since we've acquired the van. And choosing function over form has never been me at all.
For a minute, I had flash backs to 4th grade, when I really wanted a training bra. Stay with me here. I went to a slumber party and pretty much every girl there but me had one, So, I wore this little camisole thing under my shirt and when it came time to change into our p.j.’s, I told everyone that we were too poor to buy a bra, so I had to wear this camisole instead.
Ok, so, the parallel of me getting a training bra and me getting a van is sort of a stretch, but you see what I mean, right? See, I felt like that I might feel the need to make up some silly reason for why we had to get a van. Like that we were too poor to buy a car, so had to buy a van instead. Or that when we went to go look at it, the seller was an 80 year old woman who couldn't pay her bills, so we had no choice. (this scenario would also make us seem like really caring people, which would have been a bonus).
But, I don’t feel like this at all. I really love that van. I decided that I need to embrace the van, and embrace this time of my life. I am a mom, I drive a mini-van, and I am loving every minute of it! So, instead of going out and buying myself some airbrushed holiday sweaters to go with my mini-van, I am going to show my van the love and appreciation that it deserves. Van Pride!

Plus, if the need ever arised to live down by the river, you're set! :)
Actually, I think you're just regretting not going to the HS reunion, cuz we where those cool chicks in a van baby. Oh yeah, cruisin Wanamaker in the mini-van. . . all the boys wanted us :)
I can't wait to see that van this weekend!
when i see those moms clicking their keychains and two doors slide open all on their own, i have to admit i get a little jealous.
I am with you, VAN PRIDE! It is an amazing leap when you start driving a mini-van. You also know you are a mom when you start coveting your next mini-van instead of a fun sporty car. I want the Toyota Sienna eight seater next. It is amazing what kids do to you.
Getting a Mini Van is a HUGE step. I went through the same thought process as you. But now that we have had ours for a couple of months, i really don't know what I would do with out it. So much room, it is really nice. I am so excited you got one.
I fought so hard to not get a mini-van. After looking at tons of SUVs that had 7 seaters we resigned to the minivan because it was just roomier. And man, I love those automatic doors and automatic trunk. It's true, I am no longer cool. But, I still wear heels to pick up my daughter at preschool so I can at least still have some of my sex appeal (for my husband, that is)
First time visitor, lomg time follower. Thanks for the photos of the Neal-side of your family. I am a life-long friend of John and Rosemary, and it is good to see photos of them and their wonderful grandchildren. Keep up the good work (and yes, Jared is Excellence!, personified).
I'm afraid someday we'll all have to face The Van. Quite frankly, I drove my aunt's and was a little envious...So much room! And the view! And the smoothness! Wow, I never knew. Someday...
(Pictures please)
You got what...??? I leave your side for 4 years and look what happens to you! You turn into a Super Mom! Way to show off your Van Pride (but could we get a picture of the van on the blog, please?). Maybe I'll follow your lead in another...oh...ten or twelve years. :)
